To be honest, I hesitated for a long time about whether to even share this place. Bãi Dài is one of those rare corners you want to keep for yourself. But then I thought: why not? More people should know that just half an hour from bustling Nha Trang lies a completely different world, where the soundtrack is not club music or honking scooters, but the crash of waves and the roar of jet engines.
Bãi Dài is located about 25–30 minutes from central Nha Trang, heading toward Cam Ranh Airport. It is a long — several kilometres — stretch of sandy beach that, unlike the city beach, lives its own unique life. And in my experience, it divides into three completely different zones. Let me break it down so you do not get confused and can head straight to the zone that suits you best.
🏖️ The Three Faces of One Beach
Zone 1: The «Oyster Paradise» (The Start of the Beach)
This is my favourite part. As soon as you approach the beach from the Nha Trang side, a row of local cafés appears. They look, let us say, unpretentious: simple sunshades, plastic chairs, and reclining beach loungers right on the sand. But here is what matters: this is where you can have a real feast.
- 🦪 Food: The star attraction is oysters. Fried, grilled, with cheese, with onions — however you like. A kilogram of the freshest oysters here costs around 100,000 VND. Besides oysters, there are always other seafood options and drinks. It’s the kind of meal where you order one plate, then another, then give up counting.
- 🛋️ Atmosphere: This place is for absolute chill. You grab a lounger, order food and drinks, and can lie there all day watching the sea. Surprisingly, it is almost never crowded — mostly rare locals and equally «enlightened» tourists like us.
- 🏄 Activity: For those bored with just lying around, there is Cam Ranh Surf Camp. You can rent a board or book a lesson with an instructor. The waves here suit both beginners and those who already feel confident on a board.
Zone 2: The «Resort Zone» (The Middle of the Beach)
Drive a bit further, and a completely different picture emerges. Along the shore stand luxurious five‑star hotels: Alma Resort, The Anam, Mövenpick, Radisson Blu, JW Marriott, and others. This is the stretch where the beach feels curated, the sand is raked smooth every morning, and the loungers come with thick cushions.
- 💰 Prices: Staying here is not cheap, and tourists typically choose all‑inclusive packages. It makes sense: the city is far, and there are no shops or cafés nearby besides those inside the hotels. - 🏝️ Beach: The beach itself here is well‑maintained, clean, and open to everyone. Even if you are not a hotel guest, no one will chase you off this stretch of sand. You can freely come and swim.
Zone 3: The «Secret Zone» (Near the Airport)
Finally, my second favourite part. This is the very end of the beach, practically at the Cam Ranh Airport runway. You can reach it via a small sandy path that snakes through the dune grass.
- 🏝️ Totally Wild: There is absolutely nothing here. No loungers, no umbrellas, no toilets, no shops. Just endless sand and the sea. People? Also none — maybe one or two local fishermen far in the distance.
- 💧 Cleanliness: Yes, currents sometimes bring debris here. But it is not a dealbreaker and does not ruin the impression of this place at all.
- 🛩️ The Main Show: The planes. They take off and land right over your head. It is an incredibly spectacular sight, especially when the airliners come in for landing — they fly so low you feel like you can count the rivets on the fuselage. One small catch: due to the proximity of a military zone, transponders are often turned off, so you might not see them on FlightRadar. But if you stay for a couple of hours, you are guaranteed to catch at least one or two.
💡 How Not to Ruin the Experience: Seasoned Advice
Like everywhere, this place has its own rules. Follow them, and your visit will be perfect.
- ❌ DO NOT go to the «secret zone» unprepared. There is no water, no food, no shade, no restroom.
- ✅ DO bring everything you need: plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and ideally your own sun umbrella.
- ❌ DO NOT leave your belongings unattended while swimming. It is a wild spot after all — better safe than sorry.
- ✅ DO bring only the essentials and stay aware of your surroundings.
- ❌ DO NOT expect to grab a taxi at the snap of your fingers.
- ✅ DO arrange a return trip in advance with the driver who brought you, or be ready to call a car via the Grab app. Drivers from the airport usually arrive fairly quickly.
- ❌ DO NOT confuse the zones. If you want comfort, relaxation, and oysters — head to the start of the beach. If you want total wilderness and planes — go to the very end. If you want luxury and «all‑inclusive» — the middle is for you.
🚗 How to Get There
The easiest and most convenient way is by taxi or rented motorbike/car. From central Nha Trang, the drive takes about 30 minutes. Simply set your route to Khu Du Lịch Bãi Dài and follow the coastal road toward the airport. Then, pick your preferred zone.
If you want absolute freedom to explore all three zones — plus the nearby attractions — I recommend renting a car at Cam Ranh Airport.
