They are usually dusty, boring, and make me want to escape outside as quickly as possible. But the&nbsp;<strong>I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/02xBN8qWOU2\" title=\"\">nstitute of Oceanography Museum<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/vd4IrJnWOU2\" title=\"\"> Nha Trang<\/a> is a completely different story. This is a place I have returned to several times, and each visit reveals something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is located in the south of the city at&nbsp;<strong>1 Cau Da Street<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 literally a couple of minutes from the pier where boats depart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/02xBN8qWOU2\" title=\"\">for VinWonders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/r7GwsGpWOU2\" title=\"\">Hon Tam Island<\/a>. The museum sits on the grounds of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/02xBN8qWOU2\" title=\"\">Institute of Oceanography<\/a><\/strong>, the largest marine research center in Vietnam and all of Southeast Asia. It was founded by the French back in&nbsp;<strong>1922<\/strong>&nbsp;under the name \u00abIndochinese Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It started as a single room for storing specimens. Today, it houses a gigantic collection:&nbsp;<strong>over 20,000 exhibits<\/strong>&nbsp;representing more than&nbsp;<strong>4,000 species<\/strong>&nbsp;of marine flora and fauna. And the collection has been growing for nearly 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" data-id=\"95\" src=\"https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15-18x10.jpeg 18w, https:\/\/vietnamwithme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/scale_1200-15.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc0b The Main \u00abStars\u00bb: A Giant Whale and an Extinct Sea Cow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two exhibits alone make this museum worth the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is an&nbsp;<strong>enormous whale skeleton<\/strong>. It measures&nbsp;<strong>26 meters long<\/strong>&nbsp;and stands about&nbsp;<strong>3 meters high<\/strong>. To put that in perspective, that is the length of two buses parked end to end. It was discovered in northern Vietnam, several kilometers from the sea. Standing next to it, you feel absolutely tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second exhibit is a&nbsp;<strong>preserved Steller&#8217;s sea cow<\/strong>. This species was completely driven to extinction by humans back in the&nbsp;<strong>18th century<\/strong>, about 250 years ago. Seeing one with your own eyes is a rare chance to touch something that no longer exists on our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc20 What Else to See: Aquariums and a \u00abMiniature Ocean\u00bb<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum has several large sections. The most spectacular is the&nbsp;<strong>aquarium system<\/strong>, often called a \u00abminiature ocean.\u00bb More than&nbsp;<strong>300 species<\/strong>&nbsp;of marine life swim here: sharks, rays, sea turtles, moray eels, clownfish living symbiotically with anemones, bright corals, starfish, urchins, crabs, and shrimp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a separate hall of nearly&nbsp;<strong>200 square meters<\/strong>, large taxidermy specimens and skeletons of rare marine animals are on display. Rare marine animals \u2014 turtles, seals \u2014 that have gotten lost in the wild or caught in fishing nets are brought here. They are cared for, treated, their behavior is studied, and whenever possible, they are returned to their natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udca1 Practical Tips: How Not to Ruin Your Visit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u274c DO NOT come as part of a tour group.<\/strong>&nbsp;You will be rushed through, see almost nothing properly, and miss the atmosphere entirely. It is much better to come independently and explore at your own pace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u2705 DO arrive at opening time \u2014 6:00 AM.<\/strong>&nbsp;The museum opens very early (and stays open until 6:00 PM daily, no days off). Mornings are almost empty, so you can enjoy everything in peace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u274c DO NOT rush.<\/strong>&nbsp;The grounds are large, with several buildings. Many visitors race through in an hour, and that is a mistake. The fare is only&nbsp;<strong>4,000 VND<\/strong>&nbsp;(about $0.15 USD), and the bus runs from the northern parts of the city directly to Cau Da Port.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By motorbike:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/BMHZs8sWOU2\" title=\"\">&nbsp;If you have rented a bike,<\/a> simply head south along the promenade from the center; it takes&nbsp;<strong>10\u201315 minutes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcb0 Cost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrance tickets cost:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>40,000 VND<\/strong>&nbsp;for adults (about $1.60 USD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>20,000 VND<\/strong>&nbsp;for students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10,000 VND<\/strong>&nbsp;for schoolchildren<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Free<\/strong>&nbsp;for children under 6<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets can be bought right on the spot; no advance booking is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trip.com\/t\/02xBN8qWOU2\" title=\"\">The Nha Trang Oceanography Museum <\/a>is that rare case where you get a ton of impressions for pocket change. I especially recommend it for families with kids (they will love it!) and for anyone caught on a rainy day unsure what to do.
