Vung Tau is one of the easiest beach escapes from Ho Chi Minh City, and the good news is that you can visit throughout the year.
But if your main reason for coming is the beach, swimming, long walks and outdoor sightseeing, some months are definitely more comfortable than others.
Vung Tau has a tropical monsoon climate with a distinct dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. The city stays warm throughout the year, but rainfall, cloud cover, wind and sea conditions change considerably between seasons.
Here is how I would choose the best time to visit Vung Tau depending on what you actually want to do.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Vung Tau?
For the best overall beach weather, I would choose December to March.
These months combine relatively low rainfall with warm temperatures and generally good conditions for swimming, walking along the coast and exploring the city.

That does not mean you should avoid Vung Tau from May to October. The city can still be enjoyable, and rainy-season weather does not necessarily mean rain all day.
Vung Tau Weather by Season
Dry Season: November to April
The dry season is generally the most comfortable period for a beach trip.
Rainfall drops substantially compared with the wet season, and the weather is more reliable for outdoor activities. This is when I would plan a trip if I wanted to spend most of my time outside.
December through March is particularly attractive for beach days, coastal walks and sightseeing.
The official tourism information describes November to April as Vung Tau’s dry season, with clearer skies and calmer sea conditions generally making it a good period for swimming and exploring.
Rainy Season: May to October
The rainy season brings much more precipitation, higher humidity and more frequent thunderstorms.
However, this is where visitors sometimes misunderstand southern Vietnam’s weather.
A rainy-season trip does not automatically mean six months of constant rain. Weather can change quickly, and a day can still contain several hours of sunshine before a heavy shower arrives.
The main disadvantage is less predictable beach weather. If you only have one day in Vung Tau and that day happens to be wet and windy, there is not much flexibility if swimming and the beach are your main goals.
If you are staying for several days, however, you have a much better chance of simply working around the weather.
Best Month to Visit Vung Tau
January
January is one of the strongest months for a Vung Tau beach trip.
Rainfall is low, temperatures are comfortable and outdoor sightseeing is easy.
This is a good month for combining Back Beach, the promenade, the lighthouse, Mũi Nghinh Phong and other attractions without having to plan your day around rain.
February
February is probably the best month if weather is your number-one priority.
Climate data shows extremely low average rainfall during February, while temperatures remain warm enough for the beach.
The skies are also among the clearest of the year.
If I could choose a month purely for reliable beach weather, February would be near the top of my list.
March
March continues the excellent dry-season conditions.
It becomes warmer, but the weather remains relatively dry and suitable for swimming, walking and outdoor sightseeing.
This is also a good month if you want to combine a beach trip with Vung Tau’s mountain and cultural attractions.
April
April is one of the hottest periods of the year.
Daytime temperatures can reach around 32°C or more, so beach activities are still attractive, but midday sightseeing can feel quite hot.
If you visit in April, I would structure the day around the heat: beach or outdoor activities in the morning, indoor attractions during the hottest part of the afternoon and the waterfront again later in the day.
May
May marks the beginning of the wetter period.
Rainfall increases sharply compared with April, although the weather remains hot.
You can still have a good trip, particularly if you are flexible and are not coming exclusively for guaranteed beach weather.
June
June is hot, humid and considerably wetter than the first months of the year.
Short beach trips are still possible, but I would leave more flexibility in the itinerary.
If you are visiting for a weekend from Ho Chi Minh City, check the forecast shortly before travelling rather than assuming the entire weekend will be rainy.
July
July is one of the wetter months in Vung Tau.
Climate averages show high rainfall during this period, and beach conditions can be less predictable.
This does not make July a bad month for a city visit, but I would not choose it specifically for a guaranteed beach holiday.
August
August remains firmly within the rainy season.
It is hot and humid, with frequent cloud cover and substantial rainfall.
If you visit during August, keep your itinerary flexible. A morning at the beach can easily be followed by a shower, after which you can move to a museum, café or restaurant.

September
September is generally one of the wettest months of the year.
If your priority is swimming and uninterrupted beach weather, I would choose another period if possible.
If you already have to travel in September, however, do not cancel your plans simply because it is rainy season. Check the short-term forecast and build some flexibility into each day.
October
October is still part of the rainy season, but it is also a transition month.
Rainfall remains significant, although conditions gradually begin moving toward the drier part of the year.
It can be a reasonable month for travellers who want warmer weather and do not mind taking a chance on showers.
November
November marks the beginning of the dry season.
Rainfall drops compared with October, making outdoor activities increasingly comfortable.
This can be a very good shoulder-season choice if you want beach weather without travelling during the strongest peak period.
December
December is one of my favourite months for Vung Tau.
The weather is generally dry, warm and comfortable for spending time outdoors.
It is a particularly good month for combining the beach with sightseeing, because you are less likely to lose an entire day to rain.
Best Time for Swimming in Vung Tau
If swimming is your main priority, I would choose December to March.
These months generally offer the best combination of warm weather, lower rainfall and more favourable beach conditions.

Best Time for Walking Along the Vung Tau Promenade
Walking is possible throughout the year, but the dry season makes it easier.
From December to March, mornings and late afternoons are particularly pleasant for walking.
During the hotter months, I would avoid long walks around midday and choose early morning or evening instead.

Best Time for Vung Tau Lighthouse and Mountain Attractions
For viewpoints and mountain attractions, dry weather is especially useful.
Clearer conditions mean better visibility and better photographs from elevated locations.
January through March is therefore an excellent period for combining the Vung Tau Lighthouse with other outdoor attractions.
If you are visiting during the rainy season, check the weather before heading up. Wet conditions can make steep paths and outdoor viewpoints less comfortable.
Best Time for Hồ Mây Park
Hồ Mây Park is another attraction where weather makes a difference.
The cable car and mountain views are much more enjoyable when visibility is good.
If you are visiting during the dry season, morning or late afternoon are both good options.
During the rainy season, keep an eye on the forecast before committing several hours to the park.

Best Time for a Weekend Trip from Ho Chi Minh City
For a simple two-day escape from Ho Chi Minh City, I would choose December through March whenever possible.
The journey is short enough that Vung Tau works well even for a single night, but you do not want to lose half of your weekend to bad weather if the beach is your main reason for going.
That said, a rainy-season weekend can still work if the forecast looks good.
Vung Tau has enough museums, cafés, restaurants, temples and indoor attractions that you can adapt your plans if a shower arrives.
Is Vung Tau Busy During the Best Months?
The best weather also attracts more visitors.
December through February is generally the strongest period for tourism, and weekends can be noticeably busier than weekdays.
This matters most for accommodation.
If you are travelling on a weekend during the dry season, compare hotel prices in advance rather than assuming the same room will cost the same as it does on a Tuesday.

If you have flexibility, weekday travel is usually my preference.
Vung Tau is extremely convenient for Ho Chi Minh City residents, which means weekends bring a larger domestic crowd.
On a weekday, the beaches and waterfront can feel considerably more relaxed.
The difference is especially noticeable around popular beach areas and hotels.
Is the Rainy Season a Bad Time to Visit Vung Tau?
No.
I would simply change the way you plan the trip.
During the dry season, you can confidently build a day around outdoor attractions.
During the rainy season, I would create a flexible itinerary with both outdoor and indoor options.
For example:
- Morning: beach or lighthouse
- Rainy afternoon: museum or café
- Evening: restaurant or waterfront walk if the weather clears
That way, one heavy shower does not ruin the entire day.
Best Time to Visit Vung Tau for Lower Prices
If you want the best combination of weather and value, I would look at the shoulder periods around November and April.
December through March generally has the strongest weather, but demand can also be higher.
During the wetter months, hotel prices can be more attractive, but you are trading some weather reliability for the savings.
For a short beach trip, I personally would not sacrifice too much weather quality just to save a little on accommodation. Vung Tau is close enough to Ho Chi Minh City that the better strategy can be choosing a good weather window rather than locking yourself into a particular date months ahead.

If you want my simple answer:
Go between December and March if you want the safest bet for beach weather.
Choose November or April if you want a good balance between weather and flexibility.
Visit May to October if your dates are fixed or you are happy to work around rain.
And if you are already in Ho Chi Minh City and see a good weather forecast for the coming weekend, I would not overthink the calendar. Vung Tau is close enough that you can simply take advantage of a good weather window.
