I have spent a lot of time exploring District 1, and what makes the area so useful for travelers is simple: you can walk to many of the most important sights, while almost everything else is only a short Grab ride away.

It is also the easiest area for travelers who have only a few days in Ho Chi Minh City.

You do not need to spend an hour crossing the city every time you want to visit another attraction.

Best Areas to Stay in District 1

Ben Thanh

Ben Thanh is one of the best choices for first-time visitors.

You are close to Ben Thanh Market, Central Market, restaurants, hotels and many major tourist attractions.

It is particularly convenient if you want to walk as much as possible.

Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi

This is the more polished side of District 1.

You will find luxury hotels, designer shops, restaurants, cafes, historic buildings and some of the city’s best views.

It is a good choice for couples and travelers who prefer a more upscale atmosphere.

Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien

This is the backpacker and nightlife section of District 1.

Accommodation is often cheaper, restaurants stay open late and nightlife is everywhere.

The downside is noise. If you want a quiet night’s sleep, do not book a hotel directly on Bui Vien.

1. Visit Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market is probably the most famous market in Ho Chi Minh City.

You can shop for souvenirs, clothing, coffee, spices and local products, while the surrounding streets are packed with restaurants and cafes.

If the main market feels too crowded or aggressive, there is another option nearby.

Central Market Saigon is an underground shopping and food complex beneath September 23 Park. It is cooler, less chaotic and completely different from the traditional Ben Thanh experience.

2. Walk Nguyen Hue Walking Street

Nguyen Hue is one of the main pedestrian spaces in central Saigon.

It is particularly interesting in the evening when the street fills with locals, families, performers and tourists.

From here you can easily continue toward the Saigon River or walk north toward Dong Khoi Street.

3. Visit the Saigon Central Post Office

The Saigon Central Post Office is one of the most recognizable historic buildings in the city.

The yellow colonial building stands directly opposite Notre-Dame Cathedral and is still a functioning post office.

Entrance is free, so there is little reason not to stop inside.

4. Walk Nguyen Van Binh Book Street

Just beside the Central Post Office is one of my favorite quiet places in District 1.

Nguyen Van Binh Book Street is a short pedestrian street covered by trees and filled with bookshops, cafes and benches.

It is completely different from the noise of the surrounding city.

I would combine it with the Central Post Office because the two attractions are essentially next to each other.

5. Explore the Colonial Center

The area around Dong Khoi, the Central Post Office and Nguyen Hue contains some of the most recognizable French colonial architecture in Ho Chi Minh City.

This is one of the best parts of District 1 simply to explore on foot.

You do not need a strict itinerary. Walk the streets, stop for coffee and explore the smaller side streets.

6. Explore Bui Vien at Night

Bui Vien is the loudest and most chaotic part of District 1.

It is packed with bars, clubs, restaurants, street food, loud music and travelers from around the world.

It is not for everyone, but if you want to experience the famous backpacker side of Saigon, this is where you will find it.

District 1 Nightlife

District 1 is the center of nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City.

You can choose between completely different experiences depending on your mood.

• Bui Vien: loud, crowded and cheap.
• Rooftop bars: skyline views and cocktails.

If you want to see the city from above, District 1 has several excellent rooftop options.

How to Get from Tan Son Nhat Airport to District 1

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is approximately 7–8 km from central District 1.

Travel time is normally around 20–40 minutes, but traffic can make the journey significantly longer during peak periods.

Bus 152 from the Airport

Bus 152 is the cheapest practical way to reach District 1.

It runs from Tan Son Nhat Airport toward Ben Thanh Market and takes approximately 30–60 minutes depending on traffic.

The main disadvantage is luggage. If you have a large suitcase, Grab is much easier.

Grab from the Airport

For most travelers, GrabCar is the easiest option.

The price is displayed before you confirm the ride, and you can pay by card or cash.

GrabBike is cheaper, but I would not recommend it if you have large luggage.

Taxi from the Airport

A metered taxi is another straightforward option, particularly for groups.

Use the official taxi area and avoid accepting rides from people approaching you inside the terminal.

Walking

Walking is the best way to explore the central part of District 1.

Grab

Use Grab when you want to reach attractions outside the central walking area or when the heat becomes too much.

GrabBike

Trying to See Everything in One Day
