Vietnam had a big night at the World Travel Awards Asia 2026, held September 27 in the Maldives, with results widely reported over the following days. The country took home “Asia’s Leading Destination” for the eighth time and “Asia’s Leading Heritage Destination” for the fourth time, alongside a long list of regional wins for individual cities and sites.
Who Won What
Hanoi was named “Asia’s Leading City Break Destination,” while Ho Chi Minh City picked up both “Asia’s Leading Festival & Event Destination” and “Asia’s Leading Business Travel Destination.” Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Tam Chúc in Ninh Bình, and the Mộc Châu/Tà Xùa area in Sơn La also won in their regional categories. On the industry side, Vietnam Airlines, Sun Group and Vietravel were among the national companies recognized.
Why It Matters
The World Travel Awards are an industry marketing exercise rather than an independent ranking, but they carry real weight with travel agents and tour operators who use them to shortlist destinations. An eighth win in the top “Leading Destination” category reinforces Vietnam’s run of strong visitor growth this year — the country recently reported 15.9 million visitors through August 2026 — and gives the tourism board fresh material to promote internationally heading into the 2026-2027 high season.
The Bottom Line
None of this changes what’s actually worth visiting, but it’s a useful signal of where the industry’s attention is heading — Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for city breaks and events, and a widening set of regional sites like Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng and Tam Chúc getting international recognition alongside the usual headline destinations.
