You do not need to fly, take an overnight train or spend half a day traveling.

That makes Vung Tau particularly attractive when you only have one or two free days.

How Long Does It Take to Get from Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau?

By road, the journey usually takes around 2 hours, although traffic can make the trip longer.

You have several options:

• Limousine or minivan: one of the most convenient choices for tourists.
• Bus: generally the budget option.
• Private car: useful for families or groups.
• High-speed ferry: an alternative way to travel between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau.

Is Vung Tau Worth Visiting for Just One Day?

Yes.

Vung Tau works particularly well as a day trip because many of the main attractions are relatively close to each other.

For me, one night is the sweet spot.

A day trip works perfectly if you mainly want the beach, seafood and a change of scenery.

Staying overnight gives you more time for sunset, dinner, evening walks, rooftop bars and a relaxed morning before returning to Ho Chi Minh City.

You also do not have to rush from one attraction to another.

Vung Tau is much more than just a beach.

Back Beach

Back Beach (Bãi Sau) is the main beach for swimming and relaxing by the sea.

One thing that surprised me about Vung Tau was the sheer number of temples and pagodas around the peninsula.

Some are large and well-known religious sites, while others are much smaller local temples that you can discover while walking along the coastal roads.

Vung Tau has good beaches, but I would not travel across Vietnam specifically for the beaches here.

Back Beach is long, convenient and perfectly good for swimming and relaxing. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants and cafes nearby, which makes everything easy.

But if you are imagining an isolated tropical beach with crystal-clear water and almost no development, Vung Tau is not that kind of destination.

It is a real coastal city as much as it is a tourist destination.

And that is actually part of what makes it interesting.

You can have seafood in a busy restaurant, walk into a quiet temple, visit a museum, climb to a viewpoint and finish the evening with a drink overlooking the sea.

Is Vung Tau Good for Foreign Tourists?

Vung Tau has a very strong domestic tourism market, especially at weekends.

Nha Trang has a stronger resort infrastructure, more organized tourist attractions and a larger international tourism scene.

But if you are already in Ho Chi Minh City and only have one or two spare days, Vung Tau wins because you can get there without flying and without spending most of your holiday traveling.

Think of it this way:

• Vung Tau: quick beach escape from Saigon.

Phu Quoc wins if your priority is a longer tropical island holiday.

That combination makes it one of the most practical short trips in southern Vietnam.

If you have one free day, go.
