One of my favourite things about Vung Tau is that you do not need an attraction ticket, a tour or even a motorbike to enjoy a big part of the city. You can simply walk along the sea.
But there is an important detail: Vung Tau does not really have one single promenade. The waterfront experience is split between two very different areas — the long Bãi Sau / Thùy Vân beachfront and the more central Bãi Trước waterfront.
I walked through both areas, and they serve completely different purposes. One is better for a proper seaside walk and beach atmosphere; the other is better for an evening stroll, cafés, city views and sunset.
Vung Tau Promenade: The Quick Answer

- Best for sunset: Bãi Trước

If you want the classic Vung Tau experience, I would actually do both: walk along Bãi Sau during the day, then move toward Bãi Trước in the late afternoon and stay for sunset.
Thùy Vân Promenade at Bãi Sau
The most substantial modern seaside walking area in Vung Tau is along Thùy Vân Road at Bãi Sau.
The renovated coastal section of Thùy Vân runs for about 3.2 kilometres through the Bãi Sau area. The road and beachfront have been significantly upgraded, with more open space toward the sea, landscaped areas and dedicated pedestrian areas.
This is the part of Vung Tau I would choose if I simply wanted to walk for an hour or two beside the beach.
You have the sea on one side, the city and hotels on the other, and plenty of places where you can stop for a drink, sit down or walk onto the beach.
How Long Can You Walk Along Bãi Sau?
This depends on what you mean by the “promenade”.
The renovated Thùy Vân coastal route itself is about 3.2 km, but Bãi Sau beach extends beyond that and the wider beachfront area is longer.
In practical terms, you do not need to plan a fixed start and finish point. You can simply choose a section, walk along the waterfront and turn around whenever you feel like it.
A comfortable one-way walk of 3 km takes roughly 35–45 minutes at an easy pace. If you stop for photographs, coffee, the beach or people-watching, expect considerably longer.
What Is the Bãi Sau Promenade Like?
The atmosphere changes depending on the time of day.
Early in the morning, the waterfront is much more active with local residents walking, exercising and enjoying the cooler air. Later in the day, tourists become more noticeable and the beach area becomes busier.
By evening, the promenade becomes more of a social space. People come to walk, sit, meet friends, eat and enjoy the sea breeze.
The renovated Bãi Sau area has also added a more modern public-space feel to this part of Vung Tau. It is no longer simply a road beside a beach.
Where Can You Sit Along the Beach?
There are beach operators along Bãi Sau offering chairs and umbrellas for visitors who want to stop rather than keep walking.
Prices vary by operator and by day, so I would not treat one beach club’s price board as the official price for the entire beach.
For example, at Hawaii Beach, I photographed a current price board during my visit. The listed prices were:

So if you just want somewhere to sit for a while, you do not necessarily need to pay for a restaurant or beach club.
Can You Walk and Swim on the Same Day?
Yes, and this is one of the reasons I prefer Bãi Sau for a daytime visit.
You can walk along the promenade, go down to the beach, swim, rent a chair and umbrella, have a drink and then continue walking later.
The beach is much more suited to this kind of full-day seaside routine than Bãi Trước.

Bãi Trước Waterfront Promenade
The second major waterfront walking area is Bãi Trước, or Front Beach.
This is a completely different experience from Bãi Sau.
Bãi Trước sits directly beside the central part of Vung Tau, with the waterfront running along the Quang Trung and Trần Phú area. The promenade and park are surrounded by cafés, restaurants, hotels and city attractions.
This is where I would come for a slower evening walk rather than a long beach workout.
Why Walk Along Bãi Trước?
The biggest advantage is the location.
You can walk beside the water and then immediately turn into the city for coffee, food or sightseeing. You are also close to several of Vung Tau’s historical and cultural attractions.
The waterfront park has trees, landscaped areas, benches and open views toward the bay. It is popular with both visitors and local residents, particularly later in the day.
If you like watching people, boats and the city changing from daytime into evening, this is probably the more interesting promenade.
Is Bãi Trước Good for Swimming?
I would not choose Bãi Trước if swimming is the main purpose of your visit.
The central waterfront is much more useful for walking, sightseeing and enjoying the bay. For a proper beach day, Bãi Sau is the better choice.
This is also why it is useful to think of the two waterfronts as separate experiences rather than trying to decide which one is simply “better”.
Best Time to Walk the Vung Tau Promenade
For Bãi Sau, early morning is one of the nicest times to walk. It is cooler, the beach is quieter and local residents are already out exercising.
Late afternoon is another good option, particularly if you want to combine the walk with a beach stop.
For Bãi Trước, I would choose late afternoon and evening.
The waterfront becomes much more lively, the temperature drops and the area starts to feel like the social centre of the city.
If you want sunset, stay around Bãi Trước.
How Long Should You Allow?
You can make a promenade walk as short or as long as you want.
For a quick walk and a few photographs, 30–45 minutes is enough.
For a relaxed seaside walk with several stops, allow 1.5–2 hours.
If you combine walking with swimming, a beach chair, food and sunset, you can easily turn it into half a day’s activity.
Vung Tau Promenade vs Nha Trang’s Trần Phú
If you have been to Nha Trang, the comparison is inevitable.
Nha Trang’s Trần Phú is a much longer and more continuous city-beach strip, with roughly 6 kilometres of main beachfront and a palm-lined coastal park. It feels like the central spine of a major resort city.
Vung Tau feels more fragmented and less uniform.
That is not necessarily a disadvantage. In Vung Tau, you can move between a long beach walk at Bãi Sau and a completely different waterfront atmosphere at Bãi Trước.
Nha Trang’s Trần Phú is better if you want a single continuous city beach with hotels, restaurants and the promenade all running together.
Vung Tau is better if you enjoy changing scenery and combining several different waterfront areas.

Vung Tau Promenade vs Da Nang’s My Khe
Da Nang is another useful comparison because its beachfront has become one of the city’s main public spaces.
The My Khe promenade has a more open, modern and resort-oriented feeling, with a long line of beachfront businesses, cafés, bars and hotels along Võ Nguyên Giáp.
Vung Tau’s Bãi Sau is more compact in the renovated section and feels more integrated with the existing city. You also have a much stronger contrast between Bãi Sau and Bãi Trước.
For a modern beach-city promenade with lots of beachfront businesses, I would give the advantage to Da Nang.
For combining a beach walk with mountains, viewpoints, museums and a more compact city, Vung Tau has its own advantage.

What Can You See Along the Vung Tau Waterfront?
One of the best things about walking here is that you do not need to follow a sightseeing checklist.
Depending on the section you choose, you can see:
- Long stretches of sandy beach
- Local residents exercising and walking
- Beach chairs and umbrellas
- Hotels and beachfront resorts
- Cafés and restaurants
- Public parks and landscaped areas
- Fishing boats and coastal views
- Vung Tau’s mountains
- Public sculptures and viewpoints
At Bãi Sau, the coastline itself is the main attraction. Around Bãi Trước, the city and waterfront become part of the experience.
What Attractions Can You Combine with the Promenade?
Vung Tau is particularly convenient because several major attractions can be combined with a waterfront walk.
From the Bãi Sau side, you can continue toward Mũi Nghinh Phong and then toward Vung Tau Lighthouse.
If you want to change from the beach to a mountain experience, Hồ Mây Park is another option.
For something indoors, the Worldwide Arms Museum and the other museums in Vung Tau can fill the hottest part of the day.
You can also combine the waterfront with restaurants and rooftop bars in the city centre.
Is the Vung Tau Promenade Free?
Yes.
Walking along the public waterfront and promenade does not require an entrance ticket.
You only pay for things you choose to use, such as beach chairs, umbrellas, food, drinks or paid attractions nearby.
This makes the promenade one of the easiest low-cost activities in Vung Tau.
Where Should You Stay for Easy Promenade Access?
If your main priority is the beach and long seaside walks, staying around Thùy Vân and Bãi Sau gives you the easiest access.
If you prefer cafés, restaurants, the central waterfront and evening walks, Bãi Trước is more convenient.

My Recommended Vung Tau Waterfront Route
If I had only one day in Vung Tau, I would not spend the whole day walking one straight line.
Instead, I would do this:
- Morning: Walk part of Bãi Sau while it is cooler.
- Late morning: Stop at the beach for a swim or a drink.
- Afternoon: Visit one of the nearby attractions, such as Mũi Nghinh Phong or the Lighthouse.
- Late afternoon: Move toward Bãi Trước.
- Evening: Walk the Front Beach waterfront and stay for sunset.
- After sunset: Choose a restaurant or rooftop bar in the city.
This gives you the two different sides of Vung Tau’s waterfront without turning the day into one very long walk.
Vung Tau Promenade: Final Verdict
Vung Tau is not the city with one spectacular continuous promenade like Nha Trang. Its waterfront is more varied than that.
Bãi Sau gives you the longer beach walk, modernised public space and proper beach atmosphere. Bãi Trước gives you the central waterfront, cafés, city life and sunset.
For me, that combination is actually what makes Vung Tau interesting.
You can spend the morning walking beside a long sandy beach, have lunch, explore a museum or mountain attraction, and then finish the day sitting by the water at Front Beach.
You do not need to pay for an attraction to enjoy any of it.
